Blog EntryOn books and Art SundayMay 2, '08 5:23 PM
for everyone

Good evening. Saint Jerome, the  patron saint of librarians and by extension of  all those who love books, was born in what is now Slovenia in 347  as Eusebius Hieronymous. First a hermit, then a secretary to a pope, he finally went to Palestine and devoted himself to studying and writing. He translated Hebrew and Greek texts and  is the scholar behind the translation of the Vulgate, the Latin version of the Bible. He also had a lion as a loyal friend since he removed a thorn from its paw, like Androcles.

Domenico Ghirlandaio, the Florentine painter and master of the fresco technique ( Michelangelo was among his disciples) , the artist who painted the young woman I'm using as an avatar , also painted Jerome in his study ( not bad for a hermit) in 1480, a fresco that can be admired at the church of Ognissanti, in Florence.

The bookish month has come to an end, but reading and reviewing will go on, although I think it's better to go back to weeks, and I already have a few wicked ideas...

I received a message from a regular participant who asks if I can post the optional theme for Art Sunday on Fridays, in order to give people time for their research and preparation of their blogs. For about two years there was no theme, optional or other. Art Sunday started as fun  and I never wanted it to become  time consuming, the idea was to have participants share their favourite artists , works of art and museums , and we would all learn with one another's personal choices and interpretations. That's what I always do, I choose a painting, an artist, a sculpture, etc, that I have seen or at least that I am familiar with and explain my reasons in a few lines.

It takes only a few minutes, but I understand other people may need more time.  The problem is the optional theme being my personal choice it  pops up any time, I don't spend the week thinking about Art Sunday. If other bloggers want to join me, it's great, we can have different views and approaches, we'll  compare them and it will become extremely interesting. But it's still something I do spontaneously. Anyway I'll try to post it on Fridays, if it can be of help.

I've just thought of a good one for this week, inspired by St. Jerome who in the 4th century travelled from Slovenia to Rome to Palestine. What do you think of Travellers?

Have fun with Art Sunday, and remember it's always time to post art, not just once a week. I'd like to ask you to go back to the original spirit of the theme day too, no need to spend too much time working on it, just share your favourites and tell us why you have chosen them, guide us through a gallery of your own, in your own words. Leave your links here, have lots of fun.

Thanks Lina for the clarification. For a few weeks now I have been trying to fiqure out how I could fit my blog entry into the theme. Yet, I know when I even think for a second that the best I have ever been able to do, has been when I did what came into my head in the moment. For example when it was "Shakespeare week" and art was the day's theme, I used my existing theme of the day on sunday..ie handsome young men to tie in to the fact that Shakespeare's day saw men filling the female roles in plays. A close to perfect match, without deviating from what I would have done otherwise.

Other times, however, a clue from the optional theme suggested, with a tiny bit of research allows me to push my familarily with art, and yet, fit within the theme without too much time being brought to bear on "trying to fit it in". Other times, of course, I have simply not be able to fit the theme at all, nothing I could think of tied into that theme, and I simply did my own thing.

My understanding of your clarification is that all of those choices are acceptable which I appreciate.

Thanks again.

BTW, the theme "Travellers" reminds me of an old movie called the "out of towners" so dont be suppreised if you get a movie review for the art categrory this week..LOL

A movie review would be fine, Vickie, you can always add a picture , I've just thought of the Baroque, Bernini and Fellini's "La Dolce Vita", Rome is so full of art...

i do agree with you, it is always a good time for art and other good stuff. travelers sounds like a great theme.

i'm sorry i haven't participated much in the bookish month. i've really been incredibly busy here at home lately, but i hope you know i always do enjoy your blog immensely.

i'll be looking forward to hearing your wicked ideas. have a wonderful evening, lina. HUGS.

It's always time for books, Deb, after all everything is part of a whole, that's why I don't like themes to stay on a particular day only, themes should be shared any time we want.

Have a lovely evening too, hugs.

i've been reading a bit, just about every night lately. it does help me to unwind.

Oh yes, it does, I've just started rereading Robert Musil's "The Man without Qualities", long, unfinished and a very important novel.

Lina, as you know, I love to do my own thing on Art Sunday. I guess I'm one of those people who needs more time. It's more relaxing for me that way. Then, on Sunday, I check out what your optional theme is. If I can put something together and participate, I make an addtional post, but I'm trying not to pressure myself about it anymore. Thanks for being a wonderful host !

That's fine, Laurita, pressure kills all the fun. Art Sunday is supposed to be like a book at bedtime, like Deb says it should help us unwind.

I also like a little more time cause it is important for me who I review and sometime I like to do my own thing I know that is okay, you know how that can be we start to research and then all of a sudden I am of on a completly different tangent actually that makes it more interesting I don't like to be to conformist .I guess I am a free thinker hehe.Travelers is a ver interesting subject so we will see what comes up in my search travels.

Heidi, this has nothing to do with conformism. I mentioned the original spirit of art Sunday, sharing your experiences and opinions and interesting others in what you say. It's not a school presentation, no pressure on anybody. When someone else posts an entry about an artist or artwork I'm not familiar with then I'll do the research, I'll try to learn more about that particular painter , sculptor or photographer. The same happens with books. I keep telling people to use their own words and opinions, if you read a book you'll have something to say about it, good or bad and of course shaped on what you have lived, read and learned. Copying and pasting what some Amazon reviewer wrote is nothing, they can be quoted and credited but if you don't bring your own opinion into it there's no way anybody knows why you recommend a book you may have not even read. The same with art, that's why I share the painting that has fascinated me for years or the artist I learned to love and understand, hoping other people will be interested too. Then I'll take their suggestions and get acquainted with their art choices, it's sharing and it's not time consuming, because there's no deadline for that research.
I hope I've made myself clear, give us your travels please and what you have selected for us from your own cultural experience, nothing can be more interesting.

Lina, reading your blog above, my blog entry immediately jumped into my head. It certainly has to do with travel, and films are a form of art..so here goes:

http://vickiecollins.multiply.com/journal/item/341/The_Artistry_of_a_bit_of_Travel_gone_very_wrong

It is a bit of a review of the Neil Simon film "The out of towners".
